Swedish cellist Kristina Winiarski enjoys a versatile career as soloist, chamber musician and guest leader in various ensembles in both Sweden and around Europe. As a frequent and appreciated performer, she has earned her acclaim as one of the rising stars among young Scandinavian musicians.
She had her professional solo debut at age 16 with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts in Washington DC, USA, and has since then collaborated with many ensembles around the world, such as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Zagreb Philharmonic, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra among others.
Her interest in exploration is evident in her wide repertoire. While excelling in the standard repertoire, she finds meaning in finding and bringing lesser-known gems to audiences. In 2021, she made history by opening the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic’s post pandemic season as the first cellist ever to perform Marie Jaëll’s cello concerto in Sweden. In 2022, her broadcasted performance of Sofia Gubaidulina’s “Sonnengesang” together with the Swedish Radio Choir and conductor Kaspar Putnins was received with high acclaim.
Kristina is a deeply passionate and devoted chamber musician. In addition to her regular recital engagements across Scandinavia, and curating her own concert series, “Music in the Villa” in Stockholm, she performs at renowned festivals throughout Europe, including the Krzyżowa Music Festival in Poland, the Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany, Open Chamber Music at Prussia Cove in Cornwall, the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and Gotland Chamber Music Festival in Sweden.
Kristina has made recordings for BIS Records, medici.tv, Radio France and the Swedish Radio P2, and has been awarded with prizes such as the ”Firmenich”-prize at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and a 1st prize in the Swedish chamber music competition “Ung & Lovande”.
Her main mentors were professors Valter Despalj at the Zagreb Music Academy, Torleif Thedéen at the Royal College in Stockholm, and Gautier Capucon at the “Classe d’excellence de Violoncelle” in Paris. She also benefited from master classes with Steven Isserlis, Anner Bylsma, Frans Helmerson, Jens-Peter Maintz and Miklos Perenyi among others.
Drawing inspiration from her distinguished teachers, she has developed her own profound passion for teaching that has lead her to give master classes at places such as the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, the Young Musicians Academy in Sweden, as well as to serve as a coach for the Verbier Festival Youth Orchestras.
She plays on a cello built by David Tecchler in Rome in 1711, loaned to her from the Järnåker Foundation. She is currently based in Berlin.
